HDFC Bank’s board has approved the appointment of Jimmy Tata as a Whole-time Director, designated Executive Director, for a three-year term, subject to approval from the Reserve Bank of India, as part of a broader leadership reshuffle at the country’s largest private lender.
The decision was taken at a board meeting on Saturday, held on the recommendation of the bank’s Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee and in line with the Banking Regulation Act and the RBI’s Commercial Banks – Governance Directions, 2025. Tata’s term will begin from the date of RBI approval or any other date the regulator specifies.
Tata brings more than 35 years of experience in banking and financial services and has been with HDFC Bank since 1994. He currently serves as the bank’s Chief Credit Officer, having previously held the role of Chief Risk Officer. He holds a Master of Financial Management degree from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management and is a Chartered Financial Analyst from the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India.
He began his career in 1987 as a consultant with Strategic Consultants Pvt Ltd, before joining Apple Industries Ltd in 1989, where he went on to head its wholesale leasing and hire purchase division. He also sits on the boards of International Asset Reconstruction Co Pvt Ltd and HDB Financial Services Ltd, and serves as a trustee of the HDB Employees Welfare Trust.
Tata had reportedly been seen as one of the internal contenders for the bank’s top job in recent weeks, though the latest exchange filing does not name him as one of the two candidates the board has separately put forward to the RBI for the Managing Director and CEO position. The identities of those two candidates have not been disclosed.
Alongside Tata’s appointment, the board also approved the reappointment of V Srinivasa Rangan as a Whole-time Director from November 23, 2026 to November 22, 2027. Rangan, 66, currently oversees human resources, corporate legal, group oversight, investment banking, information security and fraud and vigilance functions at the bank, having earlier served as Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer of HDFC Ltd before its merger with HDFC Bank in July 2023.
The board has also created an additional Whole-time Director position, taking the total number of such directors to four, apart from the MD and CEO, a move the bank said was meant to sharpen oversight of its subsidiaries and strengthen succession planning. That new position will be filled once the incoming MD and CEO takes charge, subject to shareholder approval.
